Windows 10 stops updating – What happens next?

Future-proof your IT – simple and sustainable
Microsoft's support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. To keep your systems protected and updated, it's time to take the step to Windows 11.

We know the transition can feel like a challenge, but with our help it becomes both smooth and responsible. Computers that don't meet the upgrade requirements don't have to go to waste – we make sure they get a second chance through take-back. Through our global network, they end up where they are needed most, for example in schools and businesses in countries where access to IT equipment is limited.

At the same time, you can easily upgrade to our range of computers that are already ready for Windows 11. A smart solution for both your business and the environment.

What does this mean for you?
Computers with Windows 10 will still work, but they will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or new features. The longer you use Windows 10 after the support cutoff, the more vulnerable your computer becomes to cyber threats. If you plan to continue using Windows 10 after October 2025, make sure to have a reliable antivirus program from a third-party provider, since Windows Defender will no longer be kept updated by Microsoft.

Should you upgrade to Windows 11?
If your computer is compatible with Windows 11, you should consider upgrading. Windows 11 has stricter system requirements, including support for TPM 2.0 and certain processors. If your computer does not meet the requirements, you will likely receive a warning from Microsoft that support for your current operating system will soon end.

How to upgrade
If your computer meets the system requirements, you can upgrade to Windows 11 via Windows Update. Remember that an upgrade is a comprehensive process where things can go wrong, so always back up your important files before starting the update. The upgrade is currently free, but in the future it may come at a cost.

If your computer is too old for Windows 11
If your computer is not compatible with Windows 11, you have two options:

1. Invest in a (new) computer that supports the operating system. We have a wide range of computers that are compatible with Windows 11.

2. Continue using your existing computer but consider switching to an alternative operating system like Linux. Linux Mint Cinnamon is a good choice for beginners, as it resembles Windows.

Important things to consider when switching to Linux
Before switching to Linux, check that you are not dependent on programs that only work on Windows, such as certain accounting software. Always back up your files before installing Linux, as the installation can erase all existing data.

Final words
Having to replace a fully functional computer can feel frustrating, but there are security reasons why Microsoft requires newer hardware for Windows 11. Older computers may lack the security features needed for modern threats. Previous upgrades from older Windows versions have also shown that many older computers have struggled to handle new operating systems without hardware upgrades, such as extra RAM or an SSD drive. Plan well in advance so you are ready when Windows 10 reaches its end date!
